So, when my cat LiLi started showing signs of (an injury? pain?) that I couldn't figure out, I thought maybe Julie could help. This time I scheduled a telephone appointment (she asks for photos of your pets before a telephone consultation so she can do the reading from the photo connection). So, on Friday, July 13th (yes Friday the 13th!) I gave Julie a call at our scheduled time.

Julie likes to start out the conversation by just letting the animals talk, and then she'll happily address any specific questions you have later on. I tried to ask some very generic questions, so it wouldn't be obviously leading. I mostly wanted to know:
-Does LiLi have any pain, and if so where, and how bad is it?

History: LiLi had started to hold his right-front paw in the air quite often. He wasn't limping, but when he was sitting around, he would hold that paw in the air. So, I assumed he had a problem with his paw. I took him to 2 different vets. Neither of them could find any specific problem with his paw... no foreign object (no glass, no thorn, nothing like that), and when pressure was applied to each individual toe, the cat did not seem to mind. Their best guess was that perhaps he had developed some type of nerve damage (from being declawed when he was little... he is now 3 years old). Their explanation was "it's probably just that the nerve is close to the skin, and it's like when you bump your funny bone and it hurts but goes away". I wasn't convinced. They said it could also just be from dry cracked toes and developing calluses. I had been using the crystal cat litter for awhile (which was awesome) but it is made from silica which sucks up moisture, so I figured this might be the issue. I changed back to the regular clumping litter, but it did not improve LiLi's paw situation. So, my next step was to call Julie.

At some point in our conversation about the cats Julie told me "LiLi says he is having pain in his right shoulder and neck, he says it's just killing him." This really surprised me. I hadn't thought of that possibility at all. I thought the problem had to be his paw, but this made sense, that if his right shoulder was hurting, he would want to keep the weight off that entire leg. She suggested it might have been from an injury caused by someone picking him up by the front shoulders and not supporting the back of his body weight properly, and if he resisted and twisted this could have easily caused a muscle tear or could have pulled things out of proper alignment. This made total sense to me. I even heard him cry one day when a friend tried to pick him up. I always try to teach everyone around me the proper way to pick up a cat, but I have roommates and don't know what happens when I'm not home. Then I thought about how I pick him up (properly) to love him all the time, but not being aware of an injury, I was probably also making it difficult for it to heal. Julie suggested some dietary changes so he would get the nutrition he needs to heal. I'm hoping that with a few changes, and especially me being aware of the injury, that now it will have a better chance to heal. Julie also recommended a feline chiropractor, but I have not been able to find one in the area yet.
(sidenote: a day or two after this visit, my boyfriend noticed that he could pet LiLi's head as long as he wanted and LiLi would just stand there and enjoy it, but when he moved his hand down the cat's head over his shoulders the cat would walk away... just another sign that maybe his shoulder really is the problem).

Other fun things that came up during our reading:

Julie: "Bean is saying something about a red car... a positive association with that car. It's like he's showing it to me like he's looking down at it from a window".
Monica: I don't have a red car, can't really think of a red neighbor car or anything...
Monica's Mom (who was visiting that weekend and was there for the reading): "I have a red car!"
Julie: "That's it, Bean wants you to know that he really loves it when you visit, he knows when that red car is here that it means grandma and grandpa are visiting"
(background- they park their car on the side of the house under the 2nd story cat's room window)

Note: Julie does personal (human) readings as well
At one point, Julie mentioned "why do I see owls around you?"
Monica: hmmm, I don't know. I guess maybe their could be an owl in the neighborhood but it's unlikely since I'm in the middle of the city.... *thinking* Well, actually, I really like owls and am really drawn to them lately, owls on t-shirts, garden ceramic statues of owls, etc.
Julie told me that this was probably my intuition bringing out that I had a spirit guide that took the form of an owl and I was really being drawn to them for this reason.
(sidenote: I thought this was really cool. She could have picked any animal... I don't collect owls or anything, but I do keep being drawn to them in the last year, but I don't buy them because I don't want to be the crazy knickknack owl collector lady. I'm already the crazy cat lady. :)

Julie: They (the cats) are talking about a black cat, which short fur and yellow eyes. Where is this cat?
Monica: That is a neighborhood cat that they see out our glass doors all the time.
Julie: LiLi wants to beat that cat up. He wants you to let him outside so he can beat him up. He is really confident about that.
(too funny)

Julie: LiLi says "don't get another cat" When were you thinking about getting another cat?
Monica: I'm always thinking about getting another cat. I like to visit the animal shelter and I always want to bring home a kitten.
Julie: LiLi says when he is out of his body (when he dies/but they don't think of death), you can get 5 cats, or 20 cats, but not until then.
(sidenote: I would think that if Julie was a pet advocate and she was just faking her readings to make money, then she would tell me to adopt a whole bunch of pets, so she could do more readings for me and make more $$. That is not what Julie is about. She is the real deal.)

Julie: Tell me about the small black dog.
Monica: (this was really crazy- just the previous weekend, I'd been petsitting a friend's dog and we were at the park, and there was a small black dog there running around without an owner and I was so worried that he was lost. I called animal control but they wouldn't pick him up after hours unless he was injured or vicious, they recommended I check on him the following day and call them back).
Julie: Yes, that's the one. The cats don't want you bringing that dog home, they know you thought about it, but they are really happy with things the way they are.
Note: Animals can tune into what your seeing just like we tune into radio stations

Monica: There is a Chinese boy ("Kimi") who has been living at our house for just over 2 years. Bean has hated him for all this time up until about a month ago, and now he is suddenly his friend. Why the sudden change?
Julie: How old is Kimi, is he in his 20's?
Monica: Yes, he's 21.
Julie: Yeah, because to me I see him as a teen or young adult, not as a young boy...
(sidenote: I thought this was cool, because I did mislead her when I said boy, which certainly could have been interpreted as a young 12 year old or something, but she tuned right in to his real age.)

I asked her about a duck that I had saved (after it's family got hit by a bus)... I had to bring it home for a few minutes before driving it to the Ogden Utah Animal Wildlife Rehab Center... She told me "LiLi wanted to eat that duck". That was just too funny.

Lots of other fun anecdotes. Julie tries to audio-tape the session and sends it to you via email. It's worked out great for me both times and I have lots of fun going back and listening to them later.

Anyway, the reading was DEFINITELY fun, informative, and worth every penny. I feel so much better feeling like I know what is going on with LiLi's injury/pain issue. After I talk with Julie, I feel like I have a better understanding of my animals. I highly recommend her. I brought him home last year around this time as a tiny baby kitten. I was just remembering how sweet he was as a tiny baby and then how ferocious he became at about 2 or 3 months. He was clawing and biting and wanting to play so much that my boyfriend said to me at one point "I don't even want to be in the same room with him". Today I thought I would post a few tips for new parents of kittens and reassure them that the ferocious kitten days will pass. Be patient and outsmart your wild little ones; over time they will chill out and you'll treasure the memories of the days they were so playful. Here are a few of my best tips!

Stop the bloodletting tip:
Use peppermint lotion or oil on places you don't want to get attacked- like your feet, ankles and toes. Cats have super-sensitive sniffers and they won't go near anything that has a strong minty smell. Bath and Body Works sells their Eucalyptus Spearmint oil in a spray as well. This works wonders on things like Christmas trees when you don't want your cat to climb or chew on them.

Keep them from getting electrocuted tip:
Cover those nasty piles of entertainment center power cords with a blanket. This is an easy way to keep electrical cords hidden from your baby and to keep them safe. You can also use pillows to block areas that you don't want them going behind, like the couch.

Potty training tip:
Be sure you have a "convenient" litterbox for your baby in each area of your home. I remember seeing baby Lili squat and pee by the shower in our bathroom one morning. I was mortified thinking that he was going to be a "bad" cat that peed everywhere. I realized that as a baby, he probably held his pee for as long as he could while having fun playing near me. Then, when it was time to go, he just couldn't hold it long enough to run all the way back to the other side of the house to his box. I placed a 2nd litterbox on the far end of the house and I never had that problem again... at least not with LiLi. My other cat Bean was more problematic. He did have more "accidents" in various areas of the house. Each time, if I was lucky enough to catch him in the act, I would quickly pick him up and place him in his litterbox. He eventually got the message. Scolding your cat will not work- just be patient and keep reinforcing good behavior. I would give them special treats after using their box as a reward as well.

Cat pee stain removal tip:
I did a LOT of research on the web about the best ways to remove pet stains. Most of the advice I read was similar. They all agreed: 1) clean it quickly- blot up as much as you can with paper towel or a dry cloth, don't rub it in 2) products like "Nature's Miracle" really do work. Always use a special pet stain remover. Other regular cleaning products can actually "set" the stain and make it more difficult to remove or even make worse smelling. 3) Be diligent. When Bean peed on the carpet in the corner of a bedroom, I had to spray it with Natures Miracle everyday for about 2 weeks until the smell was entirely gone, but it did work.

Collar tip:
Get your kitten used to wearing a collar early on. Visit your local pet store and create a specially engraved tag with your pet's name, your address and phone number; you certainly don't want your baby to get lost. Kittens are FAST and can sneak past you and out the door in a second. When choosing a collar, be sure to pick one that has a safety catch (these will break open if enough force is put on them). Too many cats die of strangulation when their collar gets stuck on something and they can't get loose. Even if you plan to microchip your pet, a collar is still a good idea. Without a collar, someone who finds your pet might think it is just a stray and not realize its been microchipped (they might decide to keep your baby rather than taking it to a shelter).

Socializing tip:
It's so important to socialize your kitten early on. Make an effort to have guests over to your home to play with the kitten. It's much more fun to have a cat who enjoys being around people than to have one that hides under the bed all day. Another thing to think about is protecting your kitten when you have a lot of people over. These tiny animals can easily get stepped on and be seriously or even fatally injured. Your guests aren't used to your baby running around and won't be as mindful of them as you have become. If necessary, place your kitten in another room or in their pet carrier if there are too many people over, or if people are going in and out of the house frequently during a party, etc.

The early months for a kitten are like the terrible two's for children. Hang in there and be smart about this time of development! Wear long sleeves and just accept that you will get scratched... a LOT. Your kitten will mellow out!

TV Bird Catching 101

http://www.homelovinpetsitters.com/1/post/2010/01/tv-bird-catching-101.html

http://www.homelovinpetsitters.com/1/post/2010/01/tv-bird-catching-101.html#comments

Uncategorized

I recently purchased a "Cat Sitter" DVD for my cats from Santa. I dropped off our items recently at the Utah Humane Society and placed them under the tree with the other donations. We were able to pull together to donate several bags of dog and cat food, two boxes of newspapers, a dog bed, a fleece blanket, and paper towels and cleaning supplies. A special thanks to Alan and Heidi, Barb, Maiko, Augusto, Mary and John! I went inside and discovered that my home had been burglarized (the back door completely kicked in)! My first thought was for my two cats who actually came to greet me right away. Thankfully, they were both safe and sound inside the house. My glass storm doors (screen doors), which have automatic springs on them so that they swing shut on their own, were what had kept my cats from wandering outside when the thief let my front door wide open. I had really never thought about those doors being a safety measure for my pets, but they alone saved my babies that day. My cats are inside-only cats and would have quickly taken advantage of the open door to go exploring... Even though I have them both microchipped, there is no guarantee they would have been found or returned to me. The city holds so many dangers for cats. I often see cats that have been hit in the road by a car, and I don't want to even think about what might have happened if a dog had gotten a hold of one of them. So, if you are a cat owner and don't currently have a good solid screen door on your home, you might want to think about installing one. I can replace the other items that were stolen, but no amount of insurance could replace the two furry members of my family.

New!
